LOS ORILLOS The selvages (or selvedges)

Mi amiga se está haciendo una colcha y al cortar las telas me regaló los orillos.

Entonces se me ocurrió que podía "devolvérselos" bajo la forma de un almohadón.
My friend is making a quilt, and on cutting the pieces, she gave me the selvages. So I thought I could "give them back" to her in the way of a cushion.

Esta es la primera vez que trabajo con orillos. No me resultó muy fácil, ya que hay que trabajar con  mucha precisión para no "comerte" gran parte de la tela y los colores (sino quedan en su mayoría tiras blancas...) a la vez que fijas cada tira a la anterior.
This is the first tiem I work with selvages. I did not find it very easy, as you have to work very accurately in order not to "eat up" most of the fabric and the colours (if not you're mostly left with white strips...) while you are fixing each strip to the previous one. 

Jugué con los colores y la escritura para que quedara divertido.
Trabajé alrededor de un rectangulito inicial de una de las telas, cosiendo alrededor en forma de bloque "log cabin".
I played with the colours and the lettering so that I could come up with something fun.
I worked around one initial small rectangle from one of the fabric, working around it in the manner of a log cabin block.

Es como "reconstruir" una tela a partir de tiritas finas. Resulta un paño mucho más grueso y sólido, porque los orillos están tejidos de manera que resulten más gruesos y resistentes que el resto de la pieza de tela.
Y también tiene una textura menos lisa.
It is like "reconstructing" a fabric out of thin strips. The cloth that you end up with is thicker and more solid, because the selvages are woven so that they are thicker and tougher thant the rest of the piece of fabric.
And their texture is also less smooth.

Como no me podía contener, hice un poco de acolchado libre, básicamente burbujas, una especie de plumas y corazones abiertos. Había que adaptar el acolchado al ancho de las tiras, porque no me animé a hacer un diseño de acolchado más abierto y general, atravesando las líneas de los orillos, dado que la textura rugosa no permitiría destacar el diseño del acolchado.

I could not help doing a bit of Free motion quilting, basically bubbles, a sort of feathers and open hearts. I had to adapt the quilting to the width of the strips. I did not risk quilting it it a more open and general design, going across the lines of selvages, as the rough texture would not let the quiting design stand out.

También  le coloqué una etiqueta. Aquí también se puede ver la parte de atrás. El hacer la parte de atrás de un almohadón superponiendo las dos partes me gusta porque no quedan botones que, si lo usas de ese lado, son incómodos en la espalda o la parte del cuerpo que estás apoyando.
I also added a label. Here you can also see the back of the cushion. Çi very much like making the back of a cushion in two overlapping pieces because you don't have buttons which are unconfortable on your back or the part of the body you are leaning on the cushion.

Mide 50 x 50 cm. It measures 20" square.

ANIVERSARIO Anniversary

Sigo vivita y coleando, y siempre pensando en lo próximo que voy a publicar. Hoy, simplemente recuerdo el almohadón del primer artículo, y el significativo par de bloques que envié recientemente a Vancouver, EEUU, para el proyecto Pi, que es en marzo.
I'm alive and kicking, and always thinking of what I am going to post next.
Today, I simply remember the cushion which was shown on my first post, and the significant couple of blocks that I recently sent to Vancouver, USA for the Pi Project, which is in March.

 



Ahora me voy a comer un trozo de tarta de cumpleaños...
And now I'm going to eat a piece of cake...

OTRO ALMOHADON VIAJERO Another travelling cushion.

Este pasado verano hice otro almohadón viajero, que se fue a Andalucía.
Es para complementar una manta que regalé "Rapid City a (casi) 7 Picos" 
This past Summer I made another travelling cushion, which went to Andalucía.
It was made to complement a quilt I gave "Rapid City a (casi) 7 Picos"


Forma parte de la serie de almohadones personalizados que le regalo a gente joven.
It belongs to the group of personalised cushions I give to young people.

Como se puede ver, algunas de las telas son las mismas que las de la manta. Se puede poner como cuadrante en  la cama, y para estar más cómodo/a cuando lees en la cama. O para lo que el destinatario decida...
As you can see, some of the fabrics are the same ones the quilt was made with. It can be placed as a square cushion on the bed, and used to be more comfortable when you read in bed. Or for whatever the recipient decides ...

Adivinen como se llama la persona que lo recibió?  Ja! No era difícil acertar!!
Guess the name of the person who received it! Ha! It was not difficult to get it! 
Apliqué las letras con ayuda de papel termofusible, y luego practiqué mis meandros, stippling o gusanillo (3 formas de llamarlo).

Here, I appliquéed the letters with paper backed fusible web, and then practised meanders, stippling or "gusanillo (smalll worms in Spanish...)" (3 ways of calling it).

No podía faltar la etiqueta del fabricante!
And I did not forget to add the manufacturer's label!

LOS ALMOHADONES VIAJEROS Travelling cushions

Este curso lectivo mis hijos están lejos...
Uno de ellos me pidió que le hiciera fundas para un almohadón que se llevó. Como no sabes cómo va a ser la almohada que te toque, mejor llevarte la tuya. Y estoy de acuerdo. Lo usa a veces como almohada, a veces como almohadón (cojín ).

This school year my sons are far away...
One of them asked me to make cases for a cushion (pillow ) he took with him. As you do not know what the pillow is going to be like, you'd better take your own. And I agree. He sometimes uses it as a pillow, sometimes as a cushion.

ALMOHADONES /COJINES Pillows/cushions

A la gente le gusta siempre recibir un almohadón con su nombre. Sobre todo a los jóvenes.

People always receiving a cushion with their name on it. Especially young people. 

Así, he hecho unos cuantos para los jóvenes que me rodean.

Thus, I have made quite a few for the young people around me. 
Este es el ultimo que hice. 
This is the last one I made.

Para mí la parte más dura de la tarea consiste en distribuir las letras en el espacio que tenemos. No es lo mismo el nombre "Eva" que "Alejandro". Las letras tendrán que ser de distinto tamaño  y espaciadas de forma diferente para que se distribuyan de manera armónica sobre el almohadón.

To me the hardest task is to distribute the letters in the space provided. The name "Eva" is not ths same as the name "Alejandro". The letters will have to be of different sizes and also the size in between, so that they can be distributed harmoniously on the cushion.

Qué hago yo escribiendo un blog? Y en el día de mi cumpleaños... Tenía que llegar, y ha llegado.

Heme aquí. empezando un blog sobre patchwork. Este es el primero, y espero que no el último. Aparte del patchwork (almazuelas, en correcto español...) caerán otros temas varios de otras cosas que me gusta hacer con las manos.

Mi intención inicial es compartir una actividad que desde hace ya tiempo ocupa mi tiempo libre.
