SISTERS 2 UN LARGO CAMINO... A long way...

"Un largo camino, dulce y serpenteante a Sisters" es mi colcha para la edición número 40 de la exposición al aire libre de Sisters, Oregón (Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show). Mide +- 1,23 x 1,65 m (49 x 66 pulgadas).
A Sweet Long Winding way to Sisters" is my quilt for the 40th edition of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. It measures 49 x 66 inches (1,23 x 1,65 m). 

Mi participación en la exposición que se celebra este año es una colcha de diseño "winding ways" del libro de Nancy Elliott, que inicié con Adriana de Broches ). Mi desafío esta vez era coser bloques en curva.
My participation in this year's Show is a "winding ways" design from Nancy Elliot's book and a class with Adriana, from Broches . My challenge was to sew curved pieces. 

Cuando estaba casi terminada la parte de arriba (el top) decidí que incluía más colores que rompieran un poco la repetición de este dinámico diseño. Tuve que descoser bastante para incluir los círculos de otro color.
When the top was almost finished I decided to include more colours in order to break the repetition of this dynamic design. I had to unstitch quite a bit to include those circles in a different colour. 

Añadí  trocitos de otro color esparcidos en diversas partes como un permiso a mi espíritu rebelde (¿rebelde?) que busca salir de lo dictado por el patrón, una concesión a mi misma y a mi forma particular y pacifica de salirme de los moldes.
I added little scraps of colour scattered in various parts as to give myself permission to my  rebellious (rebellious, really??) spirit which tries to get out of what the pattern dictates, allowing myself to pacifically break out from the rules in my own way.

 El acolchado tenía que ser también en curva. Y se me ocurrió un diseño que hiciera resaltar las curvas y otro complementario que rellenara sin abrumar...
The quilting has to be done in curves also. So I thought of one design that would enhance the curves, and another one that would complement it and fill in the space without being too overwhelming... 

No sé si lo he logrado... Quizás una vuelta más al circulo hubiera hecho el diseño más regular. Pero aquí de nuevo ¿por qué regular?
I do not know if I made it... Maybe one more circle would have rendered a more regular design. But here again: why regular?

SISTERS 1 40 años/ 40 years

Este año, en Sisters, una pequeña localidad del estado de Oregón, en EEUU, se celebró el 40 aniversario de una exposición muy particular:

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. Toda una fiesta.
This year is the 40th anniversary of a very peculiar exhibition in  Sisters, a small town in Oregon : the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. A complete blast. 

Se exponen mas de 1000 colchas en un solo día a lo largo de las calles del pueblo.
Over 1000 quilts are exhibited during one day throughout the town streets. 




Hermoso pueblito de poco mas de 2000 habitantes en medio del bosque Nacional de Deschutes, con hermosas vistas a las montañas de Sisters, que mantienen algo de nieve en verano. En medio de altos pinos de Oregon...encuadre perfecto para una tienda perfecta de articulos de costura, patchwork y tejido:

The Stitching Post, 
alma mater del Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, que en 2015 organiza el cuarenta aniversario de esta exposición.  

Beautiful, quaint little town with little more than 2000 inhabitants in the middle of the Deschutes National forest, with beautiful views to the Sisters mountains, which keep a little snow in summer. Amongst high Oregon pine trees... Perfect background for a perfect shop with quilting, sewing, knitting articles: The Stitchin' Post , which is the alma mater of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, organises the 40th anniversary in 2015.

Se cuelgan las colchas/quilts al aire libre a lo largo de la calle principal, Cascade Avenue, y las aledañas, de 9 a 4, siempre el segundo sábado de julio. 
Quilts are hung outdoors along the main street, Cascade Avenue (and nearby streets too), from 9 to 4, always on the second Saturday of July. 

Este no es un acontecimiento cualquiera, y todo el  pueblo se vuelca con la actividad de patchwork, dando la bienvenida a miles de "quilteras" con guiños relacionadas con el patchwork, como los carteles en las calles, las colchas decorando el supermercado y otras tiendas y edificios. 
This is not just any event, and the whole town is focused on this patchwork and quilting activity, welcoming thousands of quilters with all sorts of quilting and quilting related activities, such as the street posts, quilts decorating the local supermarket and other shops and buildings.

Hasta el muro lateral de los baños públicos esta decorado con una gran pintura con colchas tendidas al sol, y la tienda de venta de artículos de segunda mano para beneficencia tiene retales, hilos, lana, agujas de tejer, patrones, guata, individuales y cochas hechos y a medio hacer, libros (muchos libros) y revistas sobre patchwork.

Even the lateral wall of the public rest rooms is decorated with a big painting depicting quilts hanging to dry in the sun; and the local second hand articles thrift shop sells articles such as fabric scraps, threads, yarn, knitting needles, patterns, placemats and quilts finished or half finished, and quilt related books ( lots of them) and magazines.

Desde muy temprano por la mañana los bomberos cuelgan las colchas de los edificios más altos, y equipos de voluntarios (unos 500) lo hacen en lugares más accesibles.

Very early in the morning the firefighters hand the quilts from the higher buildings and teams of volunteers (some 500) do it in the easier places. 

Todo el pueblo es una fiesta, y también hay puestos de comida, música, y venta de otros artículos.  

The whole town is a party, and there are also food stalls, music and sales of other articles. 

Otras tiendas, por ejemplo de antigüedades, también tienen colchas antiguas, como una que vi, de alrededor de 1880; o maquinas de coser antiguas...Other shops, for example antique shops, also offer antique quilts, such as one  I saw, which dated from around 1880; also old sewing machines.

Este año fueron 1357 colchas. 
This year there were 1357 quilts. 

Con visitantes de casi los 50 estados de EEUU y de otros países. Puedes ver a España?
With visitors from almost the 50 states of the USA and from other countries. Can you see Spain?

Equipos de voluntarios con escaleras que "rescatan" colchas que se pueden descolocar / teams of Rescue people with ladders, who help with quilts  that mey be blown away or get tangled.

Los periódicos, revistas, publicaciones locales y folletos turísticos aluden a este dia como un acontecimiento importante. The local newspapers and magazines, and the touristic brochures mention this day as an important event.

En definitiva, el paraíso de cualquier quiltera... Y ahí estuve yo! 
In all, any quilter's heaven. And there I was!

EXPOSICIÓN Y ENCUENTRO de PATCHWORK EN VILLALBA Patchwork exhibition and meeting in Villalba

Entre los días 20, 21, 22 de noviembre se organizó en Collado Villalba un encuentro y exposición de patchwork.
On 20, 21 and 22 November there was a Patchwork Meeting and Exhibition in Collado Villalba, Madrid.  
Como me interesa el patchwork y es la ciudad donde vivo, decidí hacer una colcha-tapiz con una imagen típica de Villalba: la Calle Real en el punto donde cruza al Río Guadarrama.
As I'm interested in patchwork and it is the town where I live, I decided to make a wall quilt with a typical image from Villalba: where the Real street goes over the Guadarrama River, 

Saqué una foto de la escena en uno de los días en los que se instala un mercadillo artesanal y de antigüedades / cosas de segunda mano, es decir un rastro o mercado de pulgas. Y compuse mi trabajo a partir de ella.
I took a photo of the place on a day when there is a street flea market  with crafts and antiques/second hand articles; and composed my work starting from it.


Utilicé la técnica  "raw edge" appliqué, y luego acolché.
I used a raw edge appliqué technique and then I quilted.

Me gusta siempre la idea del agua, y me atrae el intentar representarla,  aunque reconozco que está entre las cosas más difíciles de representar. No obstante, lo intenté.
I've always liked the idea of water and tried to represent it, although I acknowledge it is among the most difficult things to depict. However, I gave it a go.
1 (y solo 1) hilo dorado

One (and only one) golden thread.

Los dos arcos del puente siempre me atrajeron. ¿Será porque son arcos? ¿Porque del hueco oscuro salen el agua y la luz? No sé...
I've always been attracted by the two arches. Is it because they are arches, because water and light come out of the dark hollows?  I really don't know...
