LAS ESTRELLAS DE KAVANAGH Kavanagh Stars

Mi madre tenía una manta acolchada (un acolchado) marca Kavanagh, de buena calidad, que cuidaba mucho, y que al principio sólo usaba para las grandes ocasiones. Y cuando me lo dio, estaba en perfectas condiciones. Pero en esa época el exterior de estos acolchados era de una tela -supongo que innovadora entonces- que resultaba resbaladiza. Y en medio de la noche te despertabas con frío porque la colcha se había resbalado al suelo.
My mother had a good quality Kavanagh (brand) bedspread/coverlet, which she took great care of, and at the beginning only used for the big occasions. When she gave it to me, it was in perfect condition. But at the time the outer part of those bedpreads was of a type of fabric -I guess highly innovative then- which was slippery. And you woke up in the middle of the night feeling cold because the coverlet had slid off to the floor... 
Decidí hacer con él una manta de patchwork. I decided to make a patchwork quilt with it. 

Debido a la marca y a los bloques de estrellas el nombre es "Las estrellas de Kavanagh". Given the brand and the star blocks, the name is "Kavanagh Stars".

De esto hace ya unos 4 ó 5 años. Con ella aprendí a hacer los gansos volando (o vuelo de la oca) y a poner "sashings" (bandas entre las estrellas). That was some 4-5 years ago. While making this quilt i learnt to make flying geese and sashings.

Y también he aprendido a hacer etiquetas. And I have also learnt how to make labels.
Mide  2 x 2 m.  It is 79" square. 













Los bloques miden 30 x 30cm.
The blocks are 12".  



Como el relleno es gordito (de fibra) las líneas de acolchado son rectas, siguiendo las costuras, y están bastante separadas. 
As the filling is quite lofty (poly), the quilting lines are straight, in the ditch, and not too close together.


Es tan abrigada, que en el más frío invierno no se necesita más; sólo la sábana y las estrellas de Kavanagh...  
It is so warm that even in the coldest winter no more is needed, just the sheets and the Kavanagh stars...

MI AMIGA SUE My Friend Sue

Conocí a Sue en el camping de Sisters, OR.
I met Sue at the Sisters, OR campsite.
Al principio sólo nos decíamos Buenos Dias y Buenas Noches.
Luego comenzamos a intercambiar comentarios sobre las actividades que cada una estaba haciendo, y me mostró sus trabajos.
At the beginning, we just said "Good Morning" and "good Evening".
Then we started to comment on the activities each of us was doing; and she showed me her work.
Creo que vale la pena verlos.
It is worth taking a look.

Sue completó el calendario de Bertie's Year. La delicadeza y precisión con que realizó el pajarito para cada mes del año me dejaron extasiada.
Sue completed  Bertie's Year calendar. She was so delicate and accurate in stitching the little bird, that I was spellbound.

 

Me mostró tambíen una colcha, Desfile de Estrellas, que terminó hace un año.
She also showed me her "Star Parade" quilt she finished a year ago.

BLOQUE ASTRONOMICO Astronomical block

En febrero hablé de la astonauta Karen Nyberg y su propuesta para confeccionar una colchas con bloques con una estrella como motivo.
In February I wrote about Astronaut Karen Nyberg and her challenge to makequilts with star themed blocks.
Había que confeccionar un bloque de 9 pulgadas (unos 23 cm) y enviarlo a Houston.
The challenge was to make a 9 inch (23cm) block and send it to Houston.

Envié uno, y a finales de octurbre, en el Festival Internacional de Houston, en Texas, los mas de 2000 bloques recibidos fueron cosidos en colchas de 8 x 10 bloques c/u..
I sent one, and at the end of October, at the International Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas, the more than 2000 blocks were exhibited, stitched together in 10 x 8 block  quilts.  
Al principio creí que mi bloque no iba a aparecer, pero allí estaba, junto a muchísimos más.
At first, I thought that my block was not going to appear, but it was there indeed, together with  many others. 

Y la astronauta estuvo allí  para presentar las colchas y exponer la obra conjunta.
The astronaut was there to present the quilts and the whole of the joint work.



Había bloques de todas partes del mundo.
Blocks came from all over the world. 
Karen Nyberg contó su experiencia a bordo de la estación Espacial Internacional.

A continuación, yo también con orgullo muestro mi bloque astronómico. 4ª fila, 5ª columna. En colores azul y blanco por la bandera argentina, y rojo y amarillo por la bandera española.
And now, following, I also show my astonomical block with pride. 4th row, 5th column. In blue and white for the Argentinian flag, and red and yellow for the Spanish flag.


Hay muchas otras colchas hechas con bloques con estrellas.
There are many other quilts made with star blocks. 
Es increíble la variedad de estrellas que se pueden hacer. Una idea, multiplicidad de resultados.
Y para mí la moraleja es que cada estrella brilla por sí, pero esa "infinidad" de estrellas, todas distintas,  en conjunto forman un hermoso cielo estrellado y una "vía láctea" espectacular.
It is incredible how many different stars can be made. One idea, mulitiplicity of results.
And to me, the morale of the story is that each star shines on its own, but that "infinite" number of stars, which are all different, make as a whole a beautiful starry sky and a spectacular "milky way".

FESTIVAL DE MANTAS EN LOS BLOGS II. Blogger's Quilt Festival II

La edición de primavera 2014 del Blogger's Quilt Festival está en marcha.
The 2014 spring edition of Blogger's Quilt Festival is under way.

Como expliqué en mi entrada de ayer, este Festival ya lleva varios años, desde 2009; y está organizado por Amy, de Amy's Creative side. Miralo AQUI.
As I explained in yesterday's blog post, this Festival has been around since 2009, and it is organised by Amy, from Amy's Creative side. Look HERE.

Como se pueden presentar dos mantas, decidí entrar también en la categoría mantas de diseño original, es decir, que no se ha copiado de ningún patrón o diseño, que es creación propia.
Como es el caso de ESTRELLA -  Star que hice para una amiga, Una estrella grande que brilla recortada sobre un cielo azul oscuro.
Given that it is possible to enter up to two quilts, I decided to enter in the original design quilts category, too. That is, quilts that are the quilters' own design, that have not been done on somebody else's pattern or design.
As is the case of ESTRELLA -Star, which I made for a friend. A big star that shines against a dark blue sky.

La idea nació porque tenía una tela de diseño grande, por lo que el diseño tenía que ser grande. Y a mi amiga le gusta dormir bajo las estrellas.
The idea was born because I had a fabric with a big design, so the design of my quilt had to be big. And my friend likes sleeping under the stars.

Está hecha con telas de Marimekko, otras variadas, aprovechando una oferta en el New England Quilt Museum NEQM durante el Festival de 2013, camisas y otras que tenía en casa, todas de algodón.
Intento también atenerme a la esencia del patchwork, que es aprovechar al máximo lo que tienes.
It is made with Marimekko fabrics, and various others, that I got at a sale in the New England Quilt Museum, NEQM during the 2013 festival, shirts and others from my stash. All cotton. 
I also try to keep the essence of patchwork, which is making the most of what you have.

El acolchado es bastante simple: lineas rectas siguiendo las puntas de la estrella, alejándose del centro.
Quilting is quite simple: staright lines following thwe star points, away from the centre of the quilt.

El acolchado se aprecia mejor por el revés. Quilting is better appreciated from the back

Medidas: 150 cm, cuadrada.
Size: 150 cm square (approx 60").

Por atrás aproveché partes de bloques sobrantes.

For the back I used some extra blocks.

Y le puse una etiqueta bordada a mano.

And I hand embroidered the label.

Igual que expliqué ayer, el proceso del festival es el siguiente: 

Hay que mirar también las otras mantas expuestas en el Festival. Y, a partir del 24 de mayo y hasta el 29, se puede votar por la que más te guste de cada categoría. Los ganadores se darán a conocer el 30 de mayo.
You  have to look at the other quilts exhibited in this Festival. And, as from 24 May, and until 29 May, vote for the one you like best in each category. Winners will be announced on May 30.

Se pueden ver las piezas expuestas en la sección diseño original AQUI y se le da un "me gusta" (como en Facebook) a la que prefieras. Espero que sea la mía, y sino, disfruta de todo lo que allí se muestra.
Casi no puedo creer que mi manta se exhiba al lado de la de gente que admiro por su trabajo y creatividad. He mirado en anteriores ediciones del festival y he visto algunas verdaderas obras de arte.

I almost can't believe my quilt is shown side by side with those by people I admire for their work and creativeness. I have seen previous editions of this festival and there are some real artworks.

Esto nos lleva a tres mantas que tienen estrellas. Y si bien las estrellas son un bloque bastante simple y común en el mundo del patchwork, la disposición de las estrellas es un diseño mío, no lo copié de ningún sitio.
... and this takes us to these three quilts which have stars. Although the stars are a very frequent block within the world of patchwork, the display of all three of them was designed by me. They may be similar to many, but I did not copy them from anywhere.

1) La de Guille, Nº 6. Ésta fue una de las primeras. Data de 2009 y es una manta para ver televisión, quizás un poco corta. Y es bastante masculina. Con tela vaquera verdosa y cuadros escoceses de algodón. El acolchado es muy simple, básico. 
   Guille's quilt, #6. This was one of the first ones. It dates back to 2009 and is what I call a quilt for watching TV. It's quite masculine, and maybe a bit short. The fabric is a greenish denim and a cotton tartan (or plaids). Very simple, basic quilting.

(1) Estrellas grandes - Big stars

2) La de Cecilia y José María (Nº 15) tiene historia. Cuando me enteré de que por fin formalizaban su matrimonio por la Iglesia, quise hacerles un regalo, y lo mínimo que podía hacer era mandarles una manta. Sí, mandársela; porque vivimos en hemisferios y en continentes diferentes. Y cuando les llegó era pleno verano!!! Es para cama de dos plazas. Y son estrellas azules sobre un fondo azul. Duermen bajo un manto (¿o una manta?) de estrellas. Eso me hace feliz.
    Cecilia and José María's quilt (#15) has its own story. When I learnt that their marriage was finally being made formal by the Church, I  decided I had to send them a present, and that could be no less than a quilt. Yes, I sent them the quilt, as we live in different hemispheres and different continents. And the quilt reached them in full summer time!!! It's a double size bed quilt. Blue stars on a blue background. So they sleep under a canopy (or is it a quilt?) of stars. And that makes me happy.

3) La de Angustias, de 150 x 150 cm, Nº 18. Se llama "Estrella".
La tela pedía a gritos un diseño grande. Se me ocurrió entonces hacer una única y gran estrella que "brillara" contra un cielo azul oscuro. Así rodeé la estrella de varias franjas de azules claros, que se van haciendo más oscuros a medida que se alejan de la gran estrella central. 
    Angustias's, is 150 cm square (approx 60"). #18. It's called "Star".
The fabric design cried out for a big quilt design. So I had the idea to make only one big star that would "glitter" and stand out against a deep blue sky. So I surrounded the star with three lines of light blue, which  graduallly turn darker as they get farther from the big central star.

(3) "Estrella" "Star"

Lo mío está claramente muy lejos de la genialidad de Vincent (Van Gogh), pero está presente la idea de la noche estrellada, de torbellinos y remolinos de estrellas sobre un fondo azul porcelana, de los colores vibrantes de la Provenza...
Mine are clearly quite far from Vincent (Van Gogh)'s genius, but the ideas of a starry night with swirly stars on a porcelain-blue sky, and of the vibrant, colourful hues in the French region of Provence are present...


Hermosa canción, la de Don Mac Lean, en la que nos habla del sufrimiento de Vincent, de su locura y su fracaso por no ser escuchado, porque no sabían escucharlo, porque no lo entendían.  Al oírla tengo la reminiscencia de esos cielos, de esas estrellas en el cielo que, no sé por qué, siempre es un cielo de verano. 
¿Te imaginas dormir  bajo una manta (o manto?) de estrellas? "À la belle étoile", como dicen los franceses. 
Beautiful song, this Don Mac Lean's song, where he describes Vincent's suffering, his madness and the people failing to listen to him, "they would not listen, they did not know how..." When I hear this song I can recall those blue skies, those stars in a sky which is always  - I don't know why - a summer sky. 
Can you  imagine sleeping under a canopy (or a quilt) of stars? "À la belle étoile", as the French say.



Los bloques de estrella son bastante fáciles de hacer. Para los iniciados en el patchwork no tiene secretos.
Para los que no, aquí un adelanto: se hacen a partir de triángulos rectángulos.

Si no sabes de patchwork y te interesa saber cómo se hacen, déjame un mensaje más abajo, en los comentarios. Estoy pensando en preparar un "cómo se hace" o "tut" (tutorial) detallado. 

Star blocks are quite easy to make. For the initiated, there are no secrets. 
For those who are not, a very easy way is to start from half square triangles.
