NAVIDAD Christmas

En mi familia la tradición siempre ha sido instalar el árbol de Navidad el 8 de diciembre. No sé si porque era día festivo, el cumpleaños de mi abuela o por el día de la Virgen, pero así es la tradición; e intento mantenerla.
In my family the tradition has always been to set the Christmas tree on the 8th December. I don't know if it was because it used to be a holiday, my Granny's birthday or Virgin's Day, but that's what traditions are for and I try to keep them.





En este año de nido vacío puse el árbol y otras decoraciones el día 8, como siempre. Habrá menos gente joven entrando y saliendo, pero la familia estará reunida igualmente. No alrededor de este árbol, pero reunida.
This year of empty nesting I set the Christmas tree and other decorations on the 8th, as always. There will be less young people coming and going, but the family will nevertheless get together. Not around this tree, but will be together.

Menos recargado y menos bolas que en años anteriores.
Less heavily decorated and less baubles than previous years.

Y también coloqué una falda (o faldón) que va alrededor de la base del árbol.
And I also placed a tree skirt around the base of the tree. 

Obviamente de patchwork. Con cintas para atar en el cuello y en el borde, aunque en realidad no son necesarias.
Obviously patchwork. With ribbons to fasten it at the neck and borders, though I really don't need them.

Totalmente hecha de retazos de tela, y por una vez aproveché los puntos decorativos que trae la maquina de coser y que nunca uso...

Totally made of fabric scraps, and I got to use those fancy decorative stitches that the sewing machine has and I never use...

El fondo es más verde de lo que se ve. (y la foto no es la mejor del mundo...). 

The background is greener than it looks (and the photo is not the best in the world...).

Así es como hemos entrado en modo Navidad!

So this is how we got into the Christmas mood.

PROTEGER LA MUSICA... Protecting music...

Martin va a estar afuera durante el próximo curso lectivo con una beca ERASMUS.
Hace un tiempo se fabricó un cistro, que es como una bandurria o una mandolina. (Creo que son familia, pero no estoy muy segura de sus relaciones de parentesco.) Y como se lo quiere llevar, me pidió que le fabricara una funda protectora.
Para quienes estén interesados en el instrumento, AQUI se muestra su proceso de construcción  del cistro (solo en español, con buenas fotos).
One of my sons is going to be abroad for the next school year on an ERASMUS scholarship. A while ago he made a cittern , which is an instrument similar or like a mandonlin. (I think they are family, but I'm not sure about their family relationships...) And as he wants to take it with him; he asked me to make a protective case for it. For those who may be interested, you can see the cittern construction process (only ins Spanish but good photos).

Asi que me puse manos a la obra.
So I got down to business.
Utilicé las técnicas propias del patchwork. I used patchwork and quilting techniques.
Primero: Aunque a quienes hacemos patchwork nos chifla comprar telas, aunque no las necesitemos, y queremos siempre más y más, y compramos por impulso, esta vez utilicé un viejo jean. Quería que fuera discreto, asi que azul.
First: although those of us who like patchwork LOVE  buying fabric even though we do not need it, and we always want more and more, and we impulse buy , this time I used an old pair of jeans. He wanted it to be low key (music, Ha Ha...) so I made it blue.
Segundo: para proteger el instrumento tiene que estar acolchado, así que puse en mi maquina la guía de acolchado y acolché la tela vaquera.
Second: in order to protect the instrument it had to be padded, so I used the quilting guide on my sewing machine, and quilted the denim.

En tercer lugar, uní pedacitos, para formar una tira larga que va alrededor.
Thirdly I pieced denim pieces to make a long strip to go around.

Le puse un cierre relámpago/ de cremallera. (Me pidió que la próxima vez le ponga una pestaña por debajo para evitar rayar el instrumento.)
I attached a zip. (He says next time I have to add a flap underneath the zip to avoid scratching the instrument.)

Y helo aquí, listo para viajar.
And here it is, ready for travelling.

This is not the first time I protect music...
El siguiente es bien distinto y se lo hice a Andy hace dos años cuando también se fue de ERASMUS. Esta funda era para su ukelele. Aproveché una camisa vieja con motivos hawaianos para hacerla. Resultó un poco más colorida y vistosa, aunque el instrumento a proteger es de menor calidad.
The following is quite different  and I made it for Andy two years ago when he also went to study on an ERASMUS scholarship. I made this one for his Ukulele. I used an old Hawaian shirt, and it turned out a bit more colourful and snazzy, although the instrument to protect is of less quality

Aproveché la abotonadura de la camisa para hacer construir el cierre: los ojales y los botones ya estaban hechos...
I used the shirt's strip of buttons and buttonholes to make the closure. I did not have to make them...

Las flores hawaianas me permitieron acolchar siguiendo sus formas, y donde la tela era lisa, hice un acolchado semejando el diseño.
The Hawaian flowers made me quilt it following their pattern, and where the fabric was solid, I quilted it repeating the pattern.

La tira para colgarla está hecha en dos partes unidas por unos herrajes que permiten ajustar la longitud.
The strip for hanging is made out of two piedces joined by hardware that also allows adjusting its length.

Hace un tiempo  también hice unos protectores para la parte posterior de un banjo y una guitarra eléctrica. (Por cierto, la guitarra electrica tambien fue hecha por Martin), para evitar que se rayen cuando uno los toca y lleva puesto un cinturón con adornos metálicos, o una hebilla.
A while ago I also made some protective padding for the back of a banjo and an electric guitar. (By the way, the electric guitar was also made by Martin.) They are made to avoid scratching the back of the instrument when you are playing and you are wearing a belt with a buckle or metal embellishments.

Tiene un bies alrededor y se fija con unas cintas elásticas a los herrajes de la guitarra.
It's got a bias binding all around and is fastened to the guitar by some elasticpieces tied to the guitar's hardwarw


Lo de dejar las marcas de los dobladillos de los pantalones fue adrede y  le da el toque "rustico".
I left the marks of the worn out jeans on purpose and it gives it a "rustic" touch.

Esto de aprovechar trozos de pantalones viejos que normalmente tiraríamos a la basura para algo que no sólo es adorno sino que tiene utilidad, me resulta altamente gratificante, casi como comprar más tela...
This thing of using old jeans parte that you would normally dump for something that is not only decorative but also useful, makes it highly gratifying, almost as buying fabric...

LAS INTERMEDIAS -- The middle ones

Estas tres son mantas que yo llamo "para ver televisión", que guardas o que andan dando vueltas por ahí, y te abrigan cuando estás en el sofá. No son mantas de cama, que son más largas y adaptadas al tamaño de la cama, sea de una plaza o de dos.
These three are quilts that I call "for watching TV", the typical ones you keep around the house and keep you warm on the sofa. They are not bed quilts, which are longer and wider, and made according to the size of the bed (single or double, queen, etc...).

NO ES MANTA, PERO CUBRE. (not a quilt, but quilted)

Le di mi máquina de coser vieja a Luci. Como no tenía funda, le hice una nueva:

Todos los apliques y los relaces están hechos a máquina, excepto el nombre, las tres flores del jarrón, que están bordadas a mano; y los pomos de las puertas.
Tiene también una puerta trasera, ventanas y balcones. (bolsillos para guardar agujas, tijeras, hilos, el descosedor...)

La puerta trasera se abre para permitir guardar agujas y alfileres y tenerlos a mano.

Y el techo a dos aguas está abierto para que pase el asa de la máquina de coser. La funda está bien para quien tiene una máquina de coser. ¿A qué otro artículo del hogar le pondrías una funda de este tipo?

I gave Luci my old sewing machine. As it did not have a case or cover, I made a new one:

There's also a back door, windows and balconies. (pockets for keeping needles, scissors, spools, seam ripper...)

The back door can be opened to put away needles and pins while keeping them on hand.

And the pitched roof has a slit for the machine handle.

This cover is OK for those who DO have a sewing machine. What other domestic articles would you put a cover like this to? Tell me in the space provided for comments.

APRENDER HACIENDO (learn by doing) LAS TRES PRIMERAS (My first three)

La tres primeras mantas de patchwork que hice son las que tienen Luci, Martin y Andy.
Aprender, aprender. Soy autodidacta y lo de mirar por Internet e inscribirme en cursos vino después... 
La otra cosa es que hasta ahora todas las mantas las he hecho enteramente yo, acolchado incluido, en mi máquina Elna. 

La primera es realmente de retales, y reúne restos de los vestiditos, camisitas, pijamas, etc. de cuando eran chicos. (Scrappy, scrappy quilt)

Uf! Cuánto faltaba aprender entonces! 
Lo que pasa es que al hacerlo, uno aprende. 
A hacer coincidir cuadros, a respetar los margenes de costura, a combinar colores... 

Nº1

Con la segunda me atreví un poco más y elegí un diseño que combina dos rectángulos y un cuadrado. El diseño se llama Paisley Squares & Bars y lo saqué de AllPeopleQuilt.com, de American Patchwork & Quilting.
Por esa época, lo más que podía acolchar eran líneas rectas a lo largo de las costuras horizontales, y eso ya eran palabras mayores...

Para la tercera, ya diseñé mi propio modelo, sin saber mucho ni de diseño y de construcción de bloques.

Aprendí mucho también con ésta, tanto en el armado y combinación de los bloques,como en el diseño y precisión en las costuras. E intenté acolcharla de una manera un poco más elaborada. Pero no sabía lo suficiente. Y sudé la gota gorda...

ENGLISH

Luci, Martin and Andy have the three first patchwork quilts I've made.
Learn, learn... I'm self taught, and surfing the internet and taking patchwork courses came later...
And also, up to now all the patchwork quilts I've made, I've made entirely by myself, quilting included, on my Elna domestic machine. 

The first one is really scrappy, with remainders of my children's dresses, shirts, pyjamas, etc. when they were small. (Scrappy, scrappy quilt)

Wow! How I've learnt since then! 
And the reflection is that you  you always learn on doing something. 
You learn to match the squares, to keep constant seam allowances, to combine colours...

With the second one I dared to go a little bit further and I chose a design that combines two rectangles and a square. The design is called "Paisley Squares & Bars" and I took it from AllPeopleQuilt.com, from American Patchwork & Quilting.
Being self taught, at that time the only quilting I dared do was straight lines stitching in the ditch, and that was quite a challenge to me...

To make the third one, I now adventured into my own design, without knowing too much about design or block construction.

I also learnt a lot with this one, both in block construction and colour combination, as well as in general design and stitching accuracy. And I tried to quilt it in a more elaborate fashion. But I still not knew enough. And I toiled and sweated blood...
