ALMOHADONES /COJINES Pillows/cushions

A la gente le gusta siempre recibir un almohadón con su nombre. Sobre todo a los jóvenes.

People always receiving a cushion with their name on it. Especially young people. 

Así, he hecho unos cuantos para los jóvenes que me rodean.

Para mí la parte más dura de la tarea consiste en distribuir las letras en el espacio que tenemos. No es lo mismo el nombre "Eva" que "Alejandro". Las letras tendrán que ser de distinto tamaño  y espaciadas de forma diferente para que se distribuyan de manera armónica sobre el almohadón.

To me the hardest task is to distribute the letters in the space provided. The name "Eva" is not ths same as the name "Alejandro". The letters will have to be of different sizes and also the size in between, so that they can be distributed harmoniously on the cushion.

En mi caso usé

tres telas distintas: dos coordinadas del color dominante, y una, más clara, sobre la que van las letras. Así el nombre queda bien resaltado. El lado del revés es una de las dos telas dominantes.
In my case I used three different fabrics: two of them are the dominant colours, and a third one, lighter , where the letters go. The back part is made with one of the two  dominant colours.

Estos almohadones son de 40 x 60 cm. Este tamaño va muy bien en una cama de una plaza. En una cama de dos plazas caben dos perfectamente. Y además al ser un tamaño estándar, el relleno del almohadón se consigue fácilmente y por poco dinero. 

The size of these cushions is 40 x 60 cm. (~15 1/2 x ~23 1/2 inches). This is a good size for a twin sized bed. In a double bed, two of these fit perfectly well. And as it is a standard size the filling is easy to get and not costly.
Otros formatos y tamaños son más complicados: si más pequeño, es más difícil hacer entrar las letras; a menos que sea un nombre corto...
Other shapes and sizes are more complicated: if smaller, it is more difficult to fit the letters in, unless it is a short name...

Las letras las diseñé yo, pero no es difícil encontrar letras para copiar. Por ejemplo, AQUI. Una vez adheridas a la tela de fondo con ayuda de la plancha les pasé un pespunte todo alrededor.

The letters were designed by me, but it is not difficult to get letters to copy. For example, AQUI. Once the letters were ironed on to the back fabric, I fixed the borders with a satin stitch.

Yo lo hago en dos pasos: recorto las letras sobre papel termofusible (o de doble cara), las adhiero con la plancha a la tela y luego recorto las letras en tela. 
Alfonsina Uriburu lo hace de otra manera: pega primero el adhesivo a todo el trozo de tela y después recorta las letras. Le quedan entonces recortes de tela con adhesivo termofusible para otros trabajos. Ella explica cómo hacer los apliques AQUI.
I do this in two steps: I first cut out the letters in fusible paper. I iron them on to the fabric, and then i cut out the letters. 
Alfonsina Uriburu does this in a different way: she first adheres the fusible paper to the whole piece of fabric, and then cuts out the letters. She is then left with scraps of fabric with adhesive that she saves for future projects. She expalins how to do this HERE.

También puse una fina capa de guata para acolchar el frente del almohadón, lo que hace que las letras queden más realzadas. Un pespunte recto fue suficiente.
I also quilted the front using a very thin layer of batting, which enhanced the letters. A straight topstitch was enough.  

Por el revés superpuse dos trozos de tela en unos 10 cm. De esta manera no es necesario poner botones, que pueden ser molestos en la espalda o en la cabeza, o cremallera para cerrar la funda.
To make the back of the cushion cover, I overlapped in some 10 cm (~4") two pieces of fabric. This makes it unnecessary to use buttons -which can be bothersome on your back or on your head - or a zipper, to close the pillow case.

Y por supuesto, suelo meter una pequeña etiqueta en uno de los dobladillos por la parte de atrás...
And I obviously attach a small label to the seam on the back's inside...
