FESTIVAL DE MANTAS EN LOS BLOGS II. Blogger's Quilt Festival II

La edición de primavera 2014 del Blogger's Quilt Festival está en marcha.
The 2014 spring edition of Blogger's Quilt Festival is under way.

Como expliqué en mi entrada de ayer, este Festival ya lleva varios años, desde 2009; y está organizado por Amy, de Amy's Creative side. Miralo AQUI.
As I explained in yesterday's blog post, this Festival has been around since 2009, and it is organised by Amy, from Amy's Creative side. Look HERE.

Como se pueden presentar dos mantas, decidí entrar también en la categoría mantas de diseño original, es decir, que no se ha copiado de ningún patrón o diseño, que es creación propia.
Como es el caso de ESTRELLA -  Star que hice para una amiga, Una estrella grande que brilla recortada sobre un cielo azul oscuro.
Given that it is possible to enter up to two quilts, I decided to enter in the original design quilts category, too. That is, quilts that are the quilters' own design, that have not been done on somebody else's pattern or design.
As is the case of ESTRELLA -Star, which I made for a friend. A big star that shines against a dark blue sky.

La idea nació porque tenía una tela de diseño grande, por lo que el diseño tenía que ser grande. Y a mi amiga le gusta dormir bajo las estrellas.
The idea was born because I had a fabric with a big design, so the design of my quilt had to be big. And my friend likes sleeping under the stars.

Comenté sobre esta manta en mi blog en DE ESTRELLAS Y NOCHES ESTRELLADAS. I commented on this quilt in my blog : ON STARS AND STARRY NIGHTS.

Está hecha con telas de Marimekko, otras variadas, aprovechando una oferta en el New England Quilt Museum NEQM durante el Festival de 2013, camisas y otras que tenía en casa, todas de algodón.
Intento también atenerme a la esencia del patchwork, que es aprovechar al máximo lo que tienes.
It is made with Marimekko fabrics, and various others, that I got at a sale in the New England Quilt Museum, NEQM during the 2013 festival, shirts and others from my stash. All cotton. 
I also try to keep the essence of patchwork, which is making the most of what you have.

El acolchado es bastante simple: lineas rectas siguiendo las puntas de la estrella, alejándose del centro.
Quilting is quite simple: staright lines following thwe star points, away from the centre of the quilt.

El acolchado se aprecia mejor por el revés. Quilting is better appreciated from the back

Medidas: 150 cm, cuadrada.
Size: 150 cm square (approx 60").

Por atrás aproveché partes de bloques sobrantes.

For the back I used some extra blocks.

Y le puse una etiqueta bordada a mano.

And I hand embroidered the label.

Igual que expliqué ayer, el proceso del festival es el siguiente: 

Hay que mirar también las otras mantas expuestas en el Festival. Y, a partir del 24 de mayo y hasta el 29, se puede votar por la que más te guste de cada categoría. Los ganadores se darán a conocer el 30 de mayo.
You  have to look at the other quilts exhibited in this Festival. And, as from 24 May, and until 29 May, vote for the one you like best in each category. Winners will be announced on May 30.

Se pueden ver las piezas expuestas en la sección diseño original AQUI y se le da un "me gusta" (como en Facebook) a la que prefieras. Espero que sea la mía, y sino, disfruta de todo lo que allí se muestra.
Casi no puedo creer que mi manta se exhiba al lado de la de gente que admiro por su trabajo y creatividad. He mirado en anteriores ediciones del festival y he visto algunas verdaderas obras de arte.
You can look at the quilts shown in the original design section HERE, and "like" the one you prefer, (as on Facebook). I hope you like mine; if you don't, enjoy everything that is shown there. 
I almost can't believe my quilt is shown side by side with those by people I admire for their work and creativeness. I have seen previous editions of this festival and there are some real artworks.

FESTIVAL DE MANTAS EN LOS BLOGS Blogger’s Quilt Festival

El sábado me enteré de este Festival de mantas en los blogs, el   Blogger’s Quilt Festival, y decidí participar.
On Saturday I learnt about this Festival, the Blogger's Quilt Festival, and decided to participate. 
Está organizado por Amy's Creative Side.

Es un Festival virtual, que se viene desarrollando desde 2009. Y más que por los premios - que son interesantes - es por las ideas y por la cantidad de mantas expuestas, clasificadas por categorías según tamaños y técnicas. Inspiración, inspiración, inspiración...
This is a virtual festival, which has been around since 2009, and not only for the prizes - which are interesting -  it is for the ideas and the amount of quilts exhibited and classified into categories according to size and techniques. Inspiration, inspiration, inspiration...

Las categorías son: mantas de tamaños mini, pequeñas y grandes, con apliques, artísticas, acolchadas a mano o a maquina (doméstica), modernas, de diseño original, de colorines, de retales sobrantes.
The categories are as follows: mini, small, large quilts, appliqué, art, hand or home machine quilted, modern, original design, ROYBGBIV, scrappy. 
Yo participo con mi manta  La Perfección de Angelita, en la categoría Mantas Pequeñas.
I am  going to participate with my quilt Angelita's Perfection in the Small Quilts Category.

Expuse esta manta en abril. Entonces expliqué su proceso de confección.
I showed this quilt in April. I then explained how I made this quilt.

Es cuadrada y mide unos 175 cm de lado.
It is approximatyely 68" square. 

Está hecha con telas de algodón compradas en tiendas de Villalba y de EEUU. Y está acolchada por mí en mi Elna 2800.
The fabrics are all cotton and they were bought in different shops in Villalba and the USA. And it was quilted by me on my Elna 2800.

Fue para mí una experiencia integral y lleva el nombre de mi madre porque junto a ella aprendí los fundamentos que me permitieron encarar este trabajo, independientemente de las técnicas específicas de patchwork y acolchado, que todavía son para mí en muchos aspectos habilidades en proceso de aprendizaje.
To me it was a comprehensive experience and it is named after my mother because at her side I learnt the basics that allowed me to set out to make this quilt, independently of the specific piecing and quilting techniques, which in many aspects are to me still Work in Progress.

Aunque antes de éste hice unas 16 mantas, ésta es especial para mí porque desde el principio seguí todos los pasos para hacerla "comme il faut", como se debe hacer...
Although before this one I made some 16 quilts, this one is special because I followed all the  steps in order to make it "comme il faut", as it should be done.

Ahora, lo que hay que hacer es mirar también las otras mantas expuestas en el Festival. Y, a partir del 24 de mayo, se puede votar por la que más te guste de cada categoría.
Now what you have to do is look at the other quilts exhibited in this Festival. And, as from 24 May, vote for the one you like best in each category.

AQUI se pueden ver las piezas expuestas y se le da un "me gusta" (como en Facebook) a la que prefieras. Espero que sea la mía, y sino, disfruta de todo lo que allí se muestra Yo estoy orgullosa de participar al lado de gente a la que admiro y cuyos blogs visito con frecuencia. Me he pasado por anteriores ediciones del festival y hay algunas que son verdaderas obras de arte.

ALMOHADONES /COJINES Pillows/cushions

A la gente le gusta siempre recibir un almohadón con su nombre. Sobre todo a los jóvenes.

People always receiving a cushion with their name on it. Especially young people. 

Así, he hecho unos cuantos para los jóvenes que me rodean.

Thus, I have made quite a few for the young people around me. 
Este es el ultimo que hice. 
This is the last one I made.

Aquí, en proceso de acolchar Here, while it was being quilted.

Para mí la parte más dura de la tarea consiste en distribuir las letras en el espacio que tenemos. No es lo mismo el nombre "Eva" que "Alejandro". Las letras tendrán que ser de distinto tamaño  y espaciadas de forma diferente para que se distribuyan de manera armónica sobre el almohadón.

To me the hardest task is to distribute the letters in the space provided. The name "Eva" is not ths same as the name "Alejandro". The letters will have to be of different sizes and also the size in between, so that they can be distributed harmoniously on the cushion.

ETIQUETAS - Labels

Desde hace unas cuantas mantas ya, pongo etiquetas por el lado del revés. 
I've been placing labels since several quilts ago, on the back of the quilt.

La etiqueta ofrece datos que a la larga pueden ser importantes. Permite conocer quién confeccionó la manta, cuándo, con qué materiales, si tiene un nombre (algunas mantas, sobre todo las que se presentan a exposiciones, llevan un nombre). También permite dedicarle la manta a alguien, si la estamos regalando, y el destinatario tiene información sobre cómo cuidarla.
Labels supply data which can prove to be important in the long run. It lets you know who made the quilt, when, with what materials, if it has been given a name (some quilts -especially the ones entered in competitions- carry a name). They also let you dedicate a quilt if it is being given as a present, and the recipient gets information on how to take care of it.


He leído historias (AQUÍ)de cómo se devolvió a su dueño alguna manta perdida en una catástrofe, o cómo se terminó alguna manta que había quedado inconclusa, porque fue posible llegar a sus autores originales o a sus familiares siguiendoles la pista. Y todo gracias a las etiquetas.
I have read stories (HERE) on how a quilt lost during a natural disaster was returned to its original owner; how an unfinished quilt was finally finished as it was possible to trace its original makers or their relatives. All thanks to the labels.

¿Para qué poner una etiqueta? Why label a quilt?

• Para mi, para acordarme de cuando la hice. Y para que lo sepan los demás...
• Cuando la regalo, para que el destinatario sepa quién la hizo y cuándo 
• Para que el destinatario se sienta identificado y la sienta suya
• Para que se sepa cómo cuidarla
• Para llevar un registro de lo que voy confeccionando
• Para darle el toque final, de terminación
• Para asignarle un nombre (a algunas les pongo nombre)

• For me to remember when I made it. And for the others to know...
• When I'm giving it to somebody, so that the recipient knows who made it and when
• For the recipient to feel identified with it and feel it his7her own
• For the recipient to know how to take care of it
• To keep a record of what I make
• To give it the final, finishing touch
• To give it a name (I name some of them) 

Las primeras mantas que hice, simplemente las marqué con rotulador indeleble, para recordar cuando se hicieron. Bueno... Ahora ya no haría eso...
The first quilts I made were simply marked with a permanent marker, just to remember when they  were made. Well... I wouldn't do that now...

Me gustan los "macarons".

Me gustan mucho.
I like them a lot.

Los que más me gustan son de La Durée. The ones I like best are from La Durée.

Pero este es un blog sobre patchwork, ¿qué tiene que ver?
Me gustan los macarons; los de verdad y los de tela.
But... this is a blog about patchwork. What does this have to do?
I like macaroons, the real ones and the fabric ones.

Y por eso hice unos individuales con macarons. Con tela de macarons. So I made some macaroon place mats. With macaroon fabric.

Los macarons son algo más duraderos si con su tela se hacen individuales... Y engordan menos.
Macaroons last somewhat longer if you make place mats with macaroon fabric... And they are not as fattening.

Juego de 6. Set of 6

Estos individuales hechos con tela de macarons son para Clara y François, que viven en Paris.
These place mats made with macaroon fabric are for Clara and François, who live in Paris.

Abajo a la derecha y con reborde marrón es un bolsillo para atrapar la servilleta o los cubiertos. On the bottom right-hand side corner, with a brown border, a small pocket to trap the napkin or the knife & fork.

Están acolchados haciendo un "meandro" por entre los macarons. Y la superficie lisa por encima del bolsillo, con simples lineas rectas paralelas. They are quilted meandering among the macaroons, and the plain surface above the pocket is quilted with straight parallel lines  

Del revés no hay trabajo de patchwork, y se pueden usar por las dos caras, y combinar colores azules-fríos y beige-cálidos. On the back there is no patchwork, and they can be used on both sides, combining the blue-cold colours with the beige-warm ones.

Y puestos en la mesa podrían verse así...

Acolchado con lineas rectas, especie de plumas y meandros. Quilted in straight lines, sort of feathers and meanders

Los individuales de Alberto y Laura. Son los primeros que hice. (Las fotos son pre-históricas...)  Juego de cuatro, con sus servilletas de tela. (Se nota que son cuatro?) 
The first place mats I made were the ones for Alberto and Laura. (The photos are pre-historic...) It's a set of four, with matching napkins. (It is clear they are four, isn't it?) 

Para ser mi primer trabajo de acolchado libre están bastante bien... Considering they were my first free motion quilting work, they are quite acceptable...

Cuando tienes visitas que se quedan a más de una comida, en lugar de utilizar un servilletero, les dices que se acuerden del número que les tocó, y no es necesario poner a lavar la servilleta de tela porque no sabes cuál le tocó a quién. 
When visitors stay for more than one meal, the napkins can be used again by remembering the number you had; and there's no need for a napkin ring.

Primero dibujé los números en papel termofusible y una vez fijados a la tela roja y blanca a rayas, adherí los números a la servilleta con la plancha, y reforcé los bordes con un pespunte fino con punto zig zag (a máquina).
I first drew the numbers on fusible paper and once they were adhered to the red and white striped fabric, I fixed the numbers to the napkin by ironing, and then I reinforced the borders using a satin stich around the numbers.

Por la parte del revés se aprecia mejor el acochado The quilting is better seen on the back side

En mi casa toda la vida se usaron manteles individuales para todos los días. Son cómodos porque se adaptan a la cantidad de comensales que hay, se lavan fácilmente y casi no hay que planchar, y si son reversibles, valen por dos...
At home we have always used place mats for everyday meals. They are convenient as you use the number needed for the people who are at table; they are easy to wash and there's no need to iron them, and if they are reversible, they are worth twice.

Desde el punto de vista del patchwork permiten practicar la técnica de acolchado libre (Free motion quilting=FMQ), bajando los dientes de abajo de la máquina de coser, y cambiando el pie o prensatela por uno de  bordar.
From the patchwork point of view, they allow you to practise free motion quilting, lowering the feed dogs, and changing the foot to aenembroidery foot. 

Si es un juego de 4 ó 6 hay que repetirlo cuatro o seis veces, con lo que se aprovecha para afinar la habilidad. Al ser pequeños es mucho más fácil de manejar en la máquina que una colcha grande.
If it is a set of 4, or 6, you have to repeat the same design that number of times, so you refine your skill. As they are small, it is easier to work with them on the sewing machine than it is with a big quilt.
