ETIQUETAS - Labels

Desde hace unas cuantas mantas ya, pongo etiquetas por el lado del revés. 
I've been placing labels since several quilts ago, on the back of the quilt.

La etiqueta ofrece datos que a la larga pueden ser importantes. Permite conocer quién confeccionó la manta, cuándo, con qué materiales, si tiene un nombre (algunas mantas, sobre todo las que se presentan a exposiciones, llevan un nombre). También permite dedicarle la manta a alguien, si la estamos regalando, y el destinatario tiene información sobre cómo cuidarla.
Labels supply data which can prove to be important in the long run. It lets you know who made the quilt, when, with what materials, if it has been given a name (some quilts -especially the ones entered in competitions- carry a name). They also let you dedicate a quilt if it is being given as a present, and the recipient gets information on how to take care of it.


He leído historias (AQUÍ)de cómo se devolvió a su dueño alguna manta perdida en una catástrofe, o cómo se terminó alguna manta que había quedado inconclusa, porque fue posible llegar a sus autores originales o a sus familiares siguiendoles la pista. Y todo gracias a las etiquetas.
I have read stories (HERE) on how a quilt lost during a natural disaster was returned to its original owner; how an unfinished quilt was finally finished as it was possible to trace its original makers or their relatives. All thanks to the labels.

¿Para qué poner una etiqueta? Why label a quilt?

• Para mi, para acordarme de cuando la hice. Y para que lo sepan los demás...
• Cuando la regalo, para que el destinatario sepa quién la hizo y cuándo 
• Para que el destinatario se sienta identificado y la sienta suya
• Para que se sepa cómo cuidarla
• Para llevar un registro de lo que voy confeccionando
• Para darle el toque final, de terminación
• Para asignarle un nombre (a algunas les pongo nombre)

• For me to remember when I made it. And for the others to know...
• When I'm giving it to somebody, so that the recipient knows who made it and when
• For the recipient to feel identified with it and feel it his7her own
• For the recipient to know how to take care of it
• To keep a record of what I make
• To give it the final, finishing touch
• To give it a name (I name some of them) 

Las primeras mantas que hice, simplemente las marqué con rotulador indeleble, para recordar cuando se hicieron. Bueno... Ahora ya no haría eso...
The first quilts I made were simply marked with a permanent marker, just to remember when they  were made. Well... I wouldn't do that now...

¿Cómo es una etiqueta? What's a label like?

• Normalmente bordada a mano (en mi caso). Las he visto impresas con tinta indeleble. También se venden etiquetas para ponerle a las mantas
• Con letras bastante simples
• Con los datos básicos
• A veces con un reborde de la misma tela o con tela a juego con los colores de la manta, o aprovechando un bloque sobrante.
• Algunas bordadas a máquina (aunque no soy muy buena...)

• Normally hand embroidered (in my case). I have also seen them printed with permanent ink. Labels are also sold ready made.
• Quite simple writing
• With the basic data
• Sometimes surrounded by a "frame" made with the same fabric or coordinating fabric, matching the colours; or done on an extra block from the front of the quilt.
• Some are machine embroidered (though I'm not too good)

¿Dónde se coloca? Where is it placed?
Normalmente por el lado del revés. Cerca de un borde.

Esta no tiene más detalles porque tenía prisa por entregarla. I was in a hurry to give this one, so there are no more details. 

Sobre un trozo de tela con los colores de la bandera argentina. On a fabric scrap with the colours of the Argentinian flag.

 El marco es un trozo de tela del derecho de la manta (foto borrosa pero es lo que hay...) The frame is a piece of fabric used for making the blocks (photo is blurred, but I don't have any other...)

Bordado a maquina con un hilo ligeramente dorado Machine embroidered with a slightly golden thread.

También he visto que se hacen con forma triangular cerca de una esquina, para no tener que coser tanto a mano. Así, se cose sólo por un lado (la hipotenusa), y los otros dos lados quedan atrapados en los lados de la manta al coser el orillo (binding).

I have also seen that they are made in a triangular shape close to a corner, to avoid too much hand sewing. Thus, they are sewn only along the longest side of the triangle (the hypotenuse) and the other two sides are sewn in the binding when the binding is done.

También pongo etiquetas (menores) a otras creaciones mías como bolsos, neceseres o estuches, almohadones y camisetas. 
I also label other (minor) creations of mine, such as cosmetics bags or pencil cases, pillows or T-shirts.

Por ejemplo:

Etiqueta pirograbada en cuero en un bolso de tela vaquera. This label on a blue denim bag was made on leather with a pyrograph tool.

Así como los fabricantes ponen su etiqueta con su marca, ¿por qué no ponerle nosotros nuestra propia "marca" a lo que hemos hecho (y a veces también concebido y diseñado) con nuestras manos?
In the same way manufacturers label their products with their brand, why not put our own "brand" to what we have made (and sometimes also conceived and designed) with our own hands?

Y pienso que... si es nuestra pequeña obra de arte, ¿por qué no dejarlo inscrito para la posteridad?
And I also think if it is our own little work of art, why not keep it registered to find its place in history?
