LAS ESTRELLAS DE KAVANAGH Kavanagh Stars

Mi madre tenía una manta acolchada (un acolchado) marca Kavanagh, de buena calidad, que cuidaba mucho, y que al principio sólo usaba para las grandes ocasiones. Y cuando me lo dio, estaba en perfectas condiciones. Pero en esa época el exterior de estos acolchados era de una tela -supongo que innovadora entonces- que resultaba resbaladiza. Y en medio de la noche te despertabas con frío porque la colcha se había resbalado al suelo.
My mother had a good quality Kavanagh (brand) bedspread/coverlet, which she took great care of, and at the beginning only used for the big occasions. When she gave it to me, it was in perfect condition. But at the time the outer part of those bedpreads was of a type of fabric -I guess highly innovative then- which was slippery. And you woke up in the middle of the night feeling cold because the coverlet had slid off to the floor... 
Decidí hacer con él una manta de patchwork. I decided to make a patchwork quilt with it. 

Debido a la marca y a los bloques de estrellas el nombre es "Las estrellas de Kavanagh". Given the brand and the star blocks, the name is "Kavanagh Stars".

De esto hace ya unos 4 ó 5 años. Con ella aprendí a hacer los gansos volando (o vuelo de la oca) y a poner "sashings" (bandas entre las estrellas). That was some 4-5 years ago. While making this quilt i learnt to make flying geese and sashings.

Y también he aprendido a hacer etiquetas. And I have also learnt how to make labels.
Mide  2 x 2 m.  It is 79" square. 













Los bloques miden 30 x 30cm.
The blocks are 12".  



Como el relleno es gordito (de fibra) las líneas de acolchado son rectas, siguiendo las costuras, y están bastante separadas. 
As the filling is quite lofty (poly), the quilting lines are straight, in the ditch, and not too close together.


Es tan abrigada, que en el más frío invierno no se necesita más; sólo la sábana y las estrellas de Kavanagh...  
It is so warm that even in the coldest winter no more is needed, just the sheets and the Kavanagh stars...

UNA MAS DE BEBÉS One more baby-related

La semana pasada conocí a Marcos, que ya tiene un  mes.
Last week I met Marcos, who is already a month old.
Cuando vinieron a visitarnos, la bolsa para pañales que le había prometido a su mamá estaba terminada y esperándolos.
When they came to visit us, the diaper stacker-bag I had promised his mother was ready and waiting for them.

Al principio iba a ser muy simple, con dos bolsillos utilitarios en el frente, para guardar las típicas cosas que se necesitan cuando uno cambia los pañales a un bebé; y nada más.
At the beginning it was going to be very simple, with two practical pockets in the front to keep the typical things needed on changing diapers, and nothing else. 
Pero no me pude aguantar y añadí unos pocos apliques temáticos.
But I couldn't  help adding some thematic appliqués.

UN ENCARGO, DOS FUNDAS One commission, two cases.

Recibí un encargo de una pareja para hacer unas fundas protectoras para un i-pad mini y un teclado. Como andan siempre de aquí para allá tenían que ser todo terreno, heavy duty. 
I was commissined by a couple to make some protective cases for an i-pad mini and a keyboard. As they are always going from here to there the cases had to be heavy duty. 

La funda de i-pad es para un militar, el teclado es compartido. Eso significaba que había que hacer algo que satisficiera a los dos en cuanto a estética. Lo más difícil. 

The i-pad case is for a mililtary man, the keyboard will be shared. This meant that it had to aesthetically satisfy both. That's the most difficult part. 

 

 

La de tela militar no presentó muchas dificultades de diseño. Era importante la protección, así que metí una capa de goma EVA (etilvinilacetato) además de la guata normal. 
The camo case was not difficult to design. Protection was important, so I used a layer of foam (EVA rubber) apart from the normal batting.

La del teclado me costó algo más. No podía ser de flores, puntillas ni colores femeninos, pero tampoco de camuflaje... Se me ocurrió un color sobrio, con las iniciales. Eso no molesta a nadie (creo)
The keypad was somewhat more difficult. It could not be a flower print, lace or feminine colours, nor camo. I thought of a discreet colour and added initials. That (I think) cannot bother anybody.

BABEROS Bibs

No son mantas, pero están hechos con trocitos de tela y al menos dos capas... Casi un acolchado!
They are not quilts, but are made with fabric scraps and at least two layers... almost a quilt!

Continuando con los  regalitos para bebé, hice estos baberos para celebrar la llegada del niño. 
Aunque no me queda claro si es para el niño o para que su padre no babee...
Along the line of the small baby presents, I made these bibs to celebrate the baby's arrival. 
However, I don' t know if they are for the baby or for his father not to drool...

EL BEBÉ The Baby

Marcos nació el 27 de septiembre. Marcos was born on the 27th September. 
Y yo he hecho una manta de bebé, con colores alegres, sin recargar. Sobre todo sin recargar, porque no sé de qué color va a ser la habitación y el resto del mobiliario.
Mide 113 x 135 cm (44" x 53")
And I have made a baby quilt. Joyful, with cheerful colours, without making it too elaborate. Above all, not too elaborate, as I do not know the baby's room's colours, or the rest of the furniture.

Mi idea era crear algo nuevo, y no copiar los miles de diseños de colchas infantiles que circulan.
Este ha sido mi intento. Estoy satisfecha, aunque seguiré explorando.
My idea was to create something new, and not to copy the thousands of baby quilt designs that you can see around.
This has been my attempt, and I'm satisfied, although I'll keep on exploring.

Los bloques están hechos a la manera de los triángulos que se hacen cortando un cuadrado por la diagonal, pero de forma irregular.
The blocks are made in the same way as half square triangles, but cut in an irregular way.
Combiné en todos los casos dos colores contrastantes, uno claro, de fondo, el otro alegre.
I combined contrasting colours, one light as the background, the other a bright one.  

Son todos distintos, pero resultan del mismo tamaño, al cortarlos y coserlos de a pares y cruzándolos entre sí. Así me permiten elegir la combinación de colores a medida que voy jugando con su colocación.

They are all different, but the same size as I cut them in pairs and sewed them to each other. So they allow me to  choose the combination of colours as I play with their placement.

Al margen de eso, la manta es bastante tradicional, con su marco y su orillo cosido a mano. Y al final, incluí su nombre en el acolchado.
Apart from that, the quilt is quite traditional, with its border and its handsewn binding. And at the end, I quilted his name .

El acolchado es bastante simple para que no quede muy rígida, y se mantenga tierna para un bebé.
I kept the quilting quite simple in order not to have a stiff quilt, and keep it 
soft for a baby.
