FRUCTÍFERO VERANO Fruitful summer

Se va acabando el verano (aqui en el hemisferio norte) y, si bien no he terminado muchos proyectos, ha sido fructífero.
Summer is almost over (here, in the Northern hemisphere) and, although I have not finished many projects, it has been fruitful.
Junio: La carrera para tener todo listo (material para cursos, colcha para la exposición) para  Sisters, OR dio su fruto, y llegué a tiempo con todo.
durante mi breve visita a Toulouse, Francia pude hacer nuevas amigas de patchwork, que estoy segura van a ser duradeeeeeeeeras. 

June:
The rush to get everything ready (supplies for courses, quilt for show) for Sisters, OR, was successful, and I had everything in time.
During my short visit to Toulouse, France, I made new quilting friends, that I'm sure will last looooooooong.

Las tiendas
Pude visitar algunas tiendas de telas y otros productos para patchwork. La de Moab, en Utah, estaba cerrada. :(

The Stitchin Post, en Sisters, es un paraíso, y de ahí me traje algunos tesoros. 

El vecino pueblo de Bend tambien cuenta con tiendas de patchwork; y en 

Cody, WY estuve en la inmensa tienda Friends & Co., donde pude conseguir algunas telas típicamente "cowboy" y la dueña me regaló un numero de la revista Quilt Sampler con un artículo sobre su tienda...

The shops
I was able to visit a few quilt shops. the quilt shop in Moab, Utah, was closed. :(
The Stitchin Post, in Sisters, is paradise, and I brought back some treasure from there.
The neighobouring town of Bend also has quilt shops, and in
Cody, WY I was in the huge quilt shop, Friends & Co., where I could get some cowboy themed fabric, and the owner gave me a number of Quilt Sampler magazine where there' an article about the shop...

Los libros
Diversas librerías, tanto de libros nuevos 
como antiguos/segunda mano 
me ofrecieron la posibilidad de disfrutar de nuevo material de lectura sobre Patchwork y periféricos.

En Alberton, Montana, hay una curiosa librería donde conseguí unos libritos muy interesantes. 
The books
Several book shops, both new and old/second hand books gave me the opportunity to relish in new reading material about patchwork and related themes.

In Alberton, Montana, there is a quaint little bookshop where I got some very interesting books.








Los cursos

Los tres cursillos/talleres que hice en Sisters, OR en el marco del Quilters Affair, fueron fructiferos, y aunque no terminé ninguno de los proyectos iniciados, estoy en ello, y mostraré los resultados a medida que estén terminados
The courses
The three courses/workshops that I attended in Sisters, OR within the Quilters Affair activity programme, were fruitful, and although I haven't yet finished any of the projects I started, all of them are in progress, and I will show results as soon as they are finished. 

Mi visita a Seattle WA 
fue un intenso encuentro con una bloguera de mi misma edad. La forma de escribir dice mucho de cómo eres: LeeAnn, de Nifty Quilts, es en persona tal cual escribe y muestra su trabajo. El nombre de su blog (nifty=elegante, hábil, ágil) revela cómo es ella.
My visit to Seattle, WA
was an intense meeting with a blogger of my same age. the way one writes tells a lot about what you are like: LeeAnn, from Nifty Quilts, is in person exactly as she writes and shows her work, and the name of her blog (Nifty) reveals how she is.

Agosto:

De visita en Suecia, recibí como regalo otra joya Singer, que me traje a casa en el coche.

August:
While visiting in Sweden, I got this Singer jewel as a gift, and I brought her back home in the car.
Si bien pensaba que no iba a hacer nada de patchwork durante el tiempo en Italia y Suecia, resultó  al final la confección de un juego de almohadones para unas sillas de jardín, y un curso online sobre paisajes con Laura Wasilovsky que tomé en Craftsy.
Although I  thought I was not going to do much during my time in Italy and Sweden, in the end I made a set of cushions for some garden chairs, and I almost completed Laura Wasilovsky's online course on landscapes I took from Craftsy.

Y no me olvido de las personas que conocí durante este intenso verano.

Conclusión:
un verano rico en patchwork, por el combustible concreto (telas, libros, hilos, etc), así como por los conocimientos, inspiración y gente conocida para seguir un año más.
In conclusion:
A patchwork-rich summer, because of the actual fuel in fabric, books, thread, etc., and the knowkedge, inspiration and acquaintances gained to keep me running for one more year.

SISTERS 3 LA SEMANA PREVIA The previous week.

Este acontecimiento (Sisters Oudoor Quilt Show), del que pude disfrutar a pleno, no se queda solamente en el día de la exposición.
Durante la semana previa a la exposición (este año, del 6 al 10 de julio) se organizan talleres, conferencias, pic-nics, visitas guiadas y otras actividades relacionadas. En el pueblo y localidades cercanas hay un lleno total en los alojamientos, hoteles, campings, etc.
This event (SOQS), which I was lucky to fully enjoy, is not only the hanging of the quilts on the day of the Show .
The week before the Show (this year, 6 to 19 July) lots of related activities such as workshops, lectures, pic-nics, guided tours and others are organised. In the town and the surroundings the lodging places, hotels, campgrounds, etc. are full.

Las clases y talleres se desarrollan en la Escuela Secundaria de Sisters, un poco mas lejos del centro del pueblo, en un entorno maravilloso, rodeado de pinos, y con vista a las montañas (que se llaman Sisters). 

The classes, workshops and lectures are carried out in the Sisters High School, a little further off the city centre, in a wonderful environment, surrounded by 
pine trees and with spectacular views 
onto the mountains 
(which are called Sisters).

Yo me apunté a tres cursos, de los que daré cuenta cuando los tres proyectos que resultan de ellos estén terminados. 
Los cursos en los que me inscribí fueron Hexagonos con la tecnica inglesa de hacer las piezas en papel, la colcha "Supernova", y acolchado a mano (que está fuera de mi zona de confort...) 
I registered for three courses, which I'll tell about when the resulting projects are finished.
They were hexagons with the English paper piecing technique, the "Supernova" quilt, and hand quilting (which is out of my confort zone...).

• A food kiosk and wide and spacious place with tables to sit at while you are having lunch, so that you can go on talking about ... quilting...

• Massages to relax and be fit to go on quilting...

Alumnos de la escuela secundaria, voluntarios, vienen a ayudarte con los enseres que cada una trae a los numerosos cursos, y te los llevan en un carrito de supermercado desde donde te bajas del coche hasta el aula de tu actividad.

High school students come to help you carry all the supplies that most women bring to the numerous courses and activities. They carry your things in a supermarket cart from where you get off the car to your classroom.

Y hasta han pensado en actividades para las parejas de las señoras, para que no se aburran mientras sus mujeres están en los cursos... Típicamente, la pesca (hay numerosos ríos en los alrededores).

They have even thought  of the ladies' partners, so that they do not get bored while their wives are in the different workshops... Typically fishing, as there are numerous rivers in the surroundings.

Y, por supuesto: haz como esta señora, que sólo hace patchwork los días de la semana que (en inglés) terminan con "y" (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday...)
And, of course, do as this lady...

SISTERS 2 UN LARGO CAMINO... A long way...

"Un largo camino, dulce y serpenteante a Sisters" es mi colcha para la edición número 40 de la exposición al aire libre de Sisters, Oregón (Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show). Mide +- 1,23 x 1,65 m (49 x 66 pulgadas).
A Sweet Long Winding way to Sisters" is my quilt for the 40th edition of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. It measures 49 x 66 inches (1,23 x 1,65 m). 

Mi participación en la exposición que se celebra este año es una colcha de diseño "winding ways" del libro de Nancy Elliott, que inicié con Adriana de Broches ). Mi desafío esta vez era coser bloques en curva.
My participation in this year's Show is a "winding ways" design from Nancy Elliot's book and a class with Adriana, from Broches . My challenge was to sew curved pieces. 

Cuando estaba casi terminada la parte de arriba (el top) decidí que incluía más colores que rompieran un poco la repetición de este dinámico diseño. Tuve que descoser bastante para incluir los círculos de otro color.
When the top was almost finished I decided to include more colours in order to break the repetition of this dynamic design. I had to unstitch quite a bit to include those circles in a different colour. 

Añadí  trocitos de otro color esparcidos en diversas partes como un permiso a mi espíritu rebelde (¿rebelde?) que busca salir de lo dictado por el patrón, una concesión a mi misma y a mi forma particular y pacifica de salirme de los moldes.
I added little scraps of colour scattered in various parts as to give myself permission to my  rebellious (rebellious, really??) spirit which tries to get out of what the pattern dictates, allowing myself to pacifically break out from the rules in my own way.

 El acolchado tenía que ser también en curva. Y se me ocurrió un diseño que hiciera resaltar las curvas y otro complementario que rellenara sin abrumar...
The quilting has to be done in curves also. So I thought of one design that would enhance the curves, and another one that would complement it and fill in the space without being too overwhelming... 

No sé si lo he logrado... Quizás una vuelta más al circulo hubiera hecho el diseño más regular. Pero aquí de nuevo ¿por qué regular?
I do not know if I made it... Maybe one more circle would have rendered a more regular design. But here again: why regular?

SISTERS 1 40 años/ 40 years

Este año, en Sisters, una pequeña localidad del estado de Oregón, en EEUU, se celebró el 40 aniversario de una exposición muy particular:

Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. Toda una fiesta.
This year is the 40th anniversary of a very peculiar exhibition in  Sisters, a small town in Oregon : the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show. A complete blast. 

Se exponen mas de 1000 colchas en un solo día a lo largo de las calles del pueblo.
Over 1000 quilts are exhibited during one day throughout the town streets. 




Hermoso pueblito de poco mas de 2000 habitantes en medio del bosque Nacional de Deschutes, con hermosas vistas a las montañas de Sisters, que mantienen algo de nieve en verano. En medio de altos pinos de Oregon...encuadre perfecto para una tienda perfecta de articulos de costura, patchwork y tejido:

The Stitching Post, 
alma mater del Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, que en 2015 organiza el cuarenta aniversario de esta exposición.  

Beautiful, quaint little town with little more than 2000 inhabitants in the middle of the Deschutes National forest, with beautiful views to the Sisters mountains, which keep a little snow in summer. Amongst high Oregon pine trees... Perfect background for a perfect shop with quilting, sewing, knitting articles: The Stitchin' Post , which is the alma mater of the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show, organises the 40th anniversary in 2015.

Se cuelgan las colchas/quilts al aire libre a lo largo de la calle principal, Cascade Avenue, y las aledañas, de 9 a 4, siempre el segundo sábado de julio. 
Quilts are hung outdoors along the main street, Cascade Avenue (and nearby streets too), from 9 to 4, always on the second Saturday of July. 

Este no es un acontecimiento cualquiera, y todo el  pueblo se vuelca con la actividad de patchwork, dando la bienvenida a miles de "quilteras" con guiños relacionadas con el patchwork, como los carteles en las calles, las colchas decorando el supermercado y otras tiendas y edificios. 
This is not just any event, and the whole town is focused on this patchwork and quilting activity, welcoming thousands of quilters with all sorts of quilting and quilting related activities, such as the street posts, quilts decorating the local supermarket and other shops and buildings.

Hasta el muro lateral de los baños públicos esta decorado con una gran pintura con colchas tendidas al sol, y la tienda de venta de artículos de segunda mano para beneficencia tiene retales, hilos, lana, agujas de tejer, patrones, guata, individuales y cochas hechos y a medio hacer, libros (muchos libros) y revistas sobre patchwork.

Even the lateral wall of the public rest rooms is decorated with a big painting depicting quilts hanging to dry in the sun; and the local second hand articles thrift shop sells articles such as fabric scraps, threads, yarn, knitting needles, patterns, placemats and quilts finished or half finished, and quilt related books ( lots of them) and magazines.

Desde muy temprano por la mañana los bomberos cuelgan las colchas de los edificios más altos, y equipos de voluntarios (unos 500) lo hacen en lugares más accesibles.

Very early in the morning the firefighters hand the quilts from the higher buildings and teams of volunteers (some 500) do it in the easier places. 

Todo el pueblo es una fiesta, y también hay puestos de comida, música, y venta de otros artículos.  

The whole town is a party, and there are also food stalls, music and sales of other articles. 

Otras tiendas, por ejemplo de antigüedades, también tienen colchas antiguas, como una que vi, de alrededor de 1880; o maquinas de coser antiguas...Other shops, for example antique shops, also offer antique quilts, such as one  I saw, which dated from around 1880; also old sewing machines.

Este año fueron 1357 colchas. 
This year there were 1357 quilts. 

Con visitantes de casi los 50 estados de EEUU y de otros países. Puedes ver a España?
With visitors from almost the 50 states of the USA and from other countries. Can you see Spain?

Equipos de voluntarios con escaleras que "rescatan" colchas que se pueden descolocar / teams of Rescue people with ladders, who help with quilts  that mey be blown away or get tangled.

Los periódicos, revistas, publicaciones locales y folletos turísticos aluden a este dia como un acontecimiento importante. The local newspapers and magazines, and the touristic brochures mention this day as an important event.

En definitiva, el paraíso de cualquier quiltera... Y ahí estuve yo! 
In all, any quilter's heaven. And there I was!
