FESTIVAL DE COLCHAS EN LOS BLOGS --  BLOGGERS QUILT FESTIVAL


Como en anteriores ediciones, participo en el FESTIVAL de Colchas en los Blogs -- Bloggers Quilt Festival, que organiza cada año Amy's Creative Side . As in previous editions, I'm participating in the Bloggers Quilt Festival, which is organised by Amy's Creative Side.

Hay diversas categorías. Yo participo aquí en la categoría de ART quilts.
There are several categories, and here I'm participating in the ART quilts category. 
Esta es mi versión de El Arco Delicado, Delicate Arch.
This is my version of the Delicate Arch.

Está hecho sobre una foto que tomé en Arches National Park, Utah, en 2015, y después de la subida para llegar hasta el punto desde donde este arco se puede ver. It is made from a photo I took in the Arches National Park, Utah, in 2015, after climbing to reach the point where the arch can be observed. 

Utilicé la técnica de "raw Appliqué", para colocar los trocitos de tela; es decir, recortándolos como un collage, eligiendo colores y formas, sin utilizar  entretela termoadhesiva. I used the "raw appliqué" technique, placing the little scraps of fabric as in a collage, choosing colours and shapes and without using fusible interfacing. 

Realcé las sombras y tonalidades de la piedra con  hilos de colores diferentes. 

I enhanced the shades and stone hues with different colour threads.

CUMPLEAÑOS Birthday

Nuestro amigo Matthias cumplió (se puede decir?) xx años.
Our friend Matthias had his (can it be disclosed?) xxth birthday.
Entre sus aficiones está la de jugar al golf. En recuerdo de este cumpleaños especial, hice un pequeño tapiz para él.(35cm x 24cm = 13" x 10")
One of his hobbies is playing golf. To remember this special birthday, I made him a small quilt.(35cm x 24cm = 13" x 10")

Usé la técnica de aplique sin dobladillo ("raw appliqué"); y los pasos fueron:
I used the "raw appliqué" technique, and these were the steps:
1) Elegí los colores de las telas. Últimamente guardo trozos muy pequeños, porque nunca se sabe si pueden servir de transición entre otros dos colores. 
1) I chose the fabric colours. Lately, I've been keeping even very small scraps. You never know if they can be of use for transition between two other colours. 
2) Combiné las tiras y trocitos siguiendo el dibujo, 
poniendo y quitando hasta encontrar la combinación que más me gusta.
2) I combined  the strips and scraps following the drawing, placing and removing the bits until I got to the combination that pleased me most. 

3) Pegué los trocitos siguiendo el diseño general. Mantengo el dibujo frente a mis ojos para no dejar que se escape el momento.
3) I glued the little scraps according to the general design. I keep the drawing in front of me to catch the moment. 

Fui colocando pequeñas tiras en colores de tal forma que formaran degradé.
I gradually placed small strips of different colours in a way  which resulted in a graduated shading.
           4) Cosí los trocitos de tela a una tela base.
   4) I stitched the fabric scraps to a foundation fabric.

5) Añadí la guata y la tela de atrás. 
5) I added the batting and the backing fabric. 



6) Lo acolché, principalmente a maquina, pero le agregué algunas puntadas a mano.

6) I quilted it, mainly by machine, but added some hand stitching.

7) Le cosí el borde/orillo y pegué la etiqueta

7) I put the binding on and added the label..

    

El proceso lleva un rato (aunque al no ser muy grande, no demasiado...), pero el efecto recompensa con creces. The whole process takes a while (although not too much, as the quilt is not very big...), but the result is very rewarding.
Cada vez me atrevo más a combinar técnicas que antes me parecía que no se debían combinar...Every time I dare to combine in more diverse ways... techniques that I used to think were not to be put together...
Dejé a propósito los bordes sin dobladillo para que que queden un poco deshilachados. Combiné acolchado a mano con acolchado a maquina.¿Por qué no?
I left the edges raw and a little fraying on purpose.  I combined machine quilting with handquilting. Why not?

Una visita A visit

Este año en junio y julio nos visitó una amiga de una ciudad de la costa oeste de EEUU. Mary es de Seattle, y estuvo pasando un mes en España, visitando ademas de Madrid, ciudades como Barcelona, Valencia, San Sebastian, Toledo...
This year, in June and July a friend from the West coast of the USA visited us. Mary is from Seattle, and she spent a month in Spain. apart from Madrid, she visited Barcelona, Valencia, San Sebastián, Toledo...
Y por supuesto fuimos de tiendas de telas en el centro de Madrid.
Of course, we went fabric shopping downtown Madrid.

Ahora me doy cuenta de que NO nos sacamos una foto juntas!! Now I realise we did NOT take aphoto together!!

Estuvimos en la "zona caliente" (de compra de telas y demás...), y tomamos churros con chocolate y dimos una vuelta por la Plaza Mayor. 
We were in the "hot zone" (for fabric shopping and related things...) and we also had some churros with hot chocolate, and we went around the Plaza Mayor. 

Nos pasamos la mañana recorriendo las más conocidas tiendas del centro de Madrid. No sé si le gustó, pero es decididamente diferente de lo que está acostumbrada.

We spent the whole morning shop hopping around the well-known fabric shops in downtown Madrid. I do not know if she liked it, but thhis is definitely different from what she is used to.

Compramos algunos retales, y  hablamos de lo que hace cada una. Mary hace "modern quilting", tendencia que cada vez me gusta más...
We did buy some fabric, and we talked about the quilting each of us does. Mary does "modern quilting", which is something that I like more and more...

Me regaló una bolsita con telas de Freddy Moran, de la que es ferviente seguidora.
She gave me this beautiful fabric basket with Freddy Moran fabrics, as she is one of her enthusiastic followers.

Unos días antes de regresar, estuvo con su marido de barbacoa en casa, y por supuesto, hablamos más de telas, técnicas, ídolo(a)s de patchwork, y yo le mostré algunos de mis trabajos: 
A few days before going back, she came home with her husband for barbecue, and again we talked about fabric, techniques, patchwork "idols", and I showed her some of my works:

PARA MIS ALUMNAS For my Pupils

Hay alumnos a los que da gusto enseñar. 
Some pupils are a pleasure to teach.   

Esta es la época en que terminan las clases, y quise dar un pequeño regalito de fin de curso a 3 de ellas. This is the time when the school course is about to end, and I wanted to give three of them a small present. 

Adolescentes.Teenagers.

Hice unos emoticones tangibles y útiles. La idea la vi en Internet, pero no registré donde. I made some tangible, useful emoticons. I saw the idea on the Internet, but I did not take note where.

Dos discos de tela de fieltro (paño lenci) y una cremallera.  Two round pieces of felt and a zip.

Fáciles de hacer. Easy to make . 

No faltó la marca de la casa. I did not miss the house brand label...

Para llevar pañuelos de papel, unos cosméticos rápidos, monedas, o bisutería para un día. Meant to carry tissues, a few quick cosmetics, coins or trinkets for the day...

SUPERNOVA

En uno de los cursos a los que asistí en Sisters,OR, hicimos la "Supernova", una forma moderna de plantearte el diseño de una colcha. In one of the courses I took at Sisters,OR, we made the "Supernova" quilt, which is a modern way of addressing the design of a quilt.

Jacquie nos dio a todas un mismo patrón, bastante detallado, a partir del cual cada uno puede crear su propia versión, resultando tantas versiones como creadoras.

Jacquie gave us all one same pattern, which is quite detailed, and on this pattern each one can create her own version, ending up with as many versions as creators.

El trabajo debe ser sistemático, pero es a la vez libre y divertido, y terminas la clase con la sensación de haber hecho mucho y con ganas de terminarlo cuanto antes.  

Work has to be done systematically, but it is at the same time freeing and great fun, and you end the class with the feeling of having progressed a lot and wanting to finish it as soon as possible.

Las escuelas de negocios enseñan que las debilidades se pueden transformar  en oportunidades.

Es lo que hice cuando la tela que tenía para la parte de abajo, que era de una sábana bajera ajustable, no era suficientemente ancha. El color era perfecto, y de hecho la cantidad era suficiente, pero en trozos. También me habían sobrado unos bloques. Esta combinación me proporcionó la oportunidad. Al final, ¿qué es el patchwork sino?Business schools teach students that weaknesses can be turned into opportunities. That's what I did when the backing fabric I had, which was from a fitted sheet, was not wide enough. The colour was perfect, and the amount enough, but in chunks. I also had block leftovers. This combination provided the opportunity. In the end, what is patchwork if not?

Y por último el acolchado, con el que me lo pasé muy bien!! Rayos saliendo de la explosión de la supernova, con burbujas hirvientes que se alejan del centro. Ja!

And lastly I had a great time quilting it. Rays coming from the supernova explosion, with boiling bubbles coming away from the centre. Ha!  

Aquí estamos en SOQS 2015 (Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show). Nos encontramos por la calle y nos sacamos una foto. Jacquie es una persona dinámica, divertida y alegre, que te contagia entusiasmo.  

And here we are at the 2015 SOQS (Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show). We met in the street and took a photo. Jacquie is a very dynamic, cheerful person, great fun to be with, and her enthusiasm is contagious.

Ahora es primavera aquí, y bajo el sol, las flores combinan bien con los colores de mi supernova. 

It's spring here now, and under the sun, the flowers combine well with the colours of my supernova.
