MAS INDIVIDUALES More placemats

This time I chose to make a set of place 6 mats, all different colours. The broad stripes design, and quilting are similar but they are all different.

Fácil, fácil: unir bandas de distinto ancho hasta llegar al tamaño deseado. en mi caso, 35 x  42cm (unas12 1/2" x 16 1/2"). Easy! I stitched together stripes of different widths until I got the desired size, 35 x 42 cm (some 12 1/2" x 16 1/2").

I used that type of batting which is like felt.
Once I'd made the first one, the rest went very quickly as I used the "quilt as you go" technique, that is, at the same time you add the next strip, you attach it to the batting. The patchwork is made at the same time as the quilting.
Del revés queda así. It looks like this on the  wrong side.

But I was not a purist, as the "quilt as you go" technique includes the backing fabric, the one on the lower part of the sandwich. That means that in one operation the whole work is done. And you only have to bind it.
Yo "hice trampa"...
I "cheated"... I only sewed the strips together and onto the batting but I did not include the backing fabric.

Why did I do this? Because I craaaaaved for the fun of quilting them. So I added one same backing fabric to all the placemats, and I quilted them.

I have been following both Lori Kennedy as Hilary Florence, and I have learnt a lot from them. as both have good taste and flair when designing and quilting.
And, without copying them to the letter, I took ideas from them.

I had the idea of quilting it in such a way that the quilting could be seen, but not cover the WHOLE surface of the placemat, so it could be dynamic and focus your sight on different points, but not end up with something stiff and rigid.

The quilting in all of them is similar in design and repetition, but done in a different place in each placemat.

To finish them, I added one same binding to all  in order to unify the whole. I made the bias binding with this marvelous little device.

My humble impression is that I got a set although they are all different. If there aren't always 6 people at table, you can vary the colours and it is less boring.

And a quick question... Why 6? Eggs (and before also bananas) are sold by the dozen, and sets of tablecloth and napkins, placemats, etc in sets of 6. Why?

  1. This is a gorgeous project. I love what you have done with the FMQ. I can recognise where you have used my designs, and thank you very much for mentioning me. I think your quilting is very tasteful. The way you have quilted squares across the stripes is so successful, and adding pattern to one or two squares is just perfect. By altering the placement of the squares on each mat, you have made each individual but by using similar designs they all hang together. Really great!
Oh, and your English is superb as well!
